Giveaway Winners

teacher emergency kit

Congratulations to Jennifer S. and Kaylynn S. for winning the Back to School Teacher Emergency Kits. I will get them in the mail to you this week. Not only will you be receiving one emergency kit each, you will also receive 2 oven mitts each since I had to buy potholder/oven mitt SETS to get the square potholders I wanted for the kit. I am very picky about my project materials and purchasing excessive items was not going to stop me from getting the exact potholder I needed. Plus, Kmart was having a huge sale.

Don’t forget, you can make one of these beauties yourself by visiting this post or this post.

Thanks again to all who participated!

Let’s Celebrate

paloma grapefruit cocktail

The Back to School Teacher Emergency Kit Giveaway has ended. In honor of this amazing giveaway I am sharing one final summer cocktail recipe to celebrate.

Of the handful of cocktails I posted this summer, the cherry margarita is still my favorite, but this weekend’s cocktail, the Paloma, was refreshing. I am definitely drawn to drinks with tart, citrus flavors in them, so this grapefruit based drink caught my attention.

paloma grapefruit cocktails ingredients

The Ingredients

  • 1 shot tequila
  • 2 shots pink grapefruit juice (preferably freshly squeezed)
  • 1 T. simple syrup or Agave syrup (or to taste)
  • splash of club soda
  • 1 lime wedge
  • crushed ice

The Directions

  • In a glass, mix the tequila, grapefruit juice, and simple syrup.
  • Add crushed ice.
  • Pour a splash of club soda on top.
  • Squeeze a wedge of lime on top and garnish with a slice of lime.
  • Ingredients list makes one large Paloma. Increase amounts as needed.

The Notes

  • To make simple syrup, Put equal parts water and sugar in a pot and heat on the stove until sugar is dissolved. Swirl the mixture a few times while heating. Remove from heat and let cool. If you only need a few cocktails, mix 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar. If you are mixing cocktails for a large group, double or triple. Leftover simple syrup can be kept in a container with a lid in the refrigerator for a long time.

Back to School Teacher Gift 2013

teacher emergency kit filled and gift tags

A year ago, I made a back to school teacher gift that I considered practically perfect (mainly because it is something this teacher mom wants to have). After making the Swim Coach Survival Kit, I decided to blend last year’s teacher gift with this summer’s swim coach gift for an updated Teacher Emergency Kit.

I originally saw the idea on a site called Tidy Mom. If you read last week’s post, the directions below are about the same, but I have new pictures and some additional notes. You do need a sewing machine for the potholder bag. If you do not have a sewing machine, use the plastic bead box from last year’s post. Or, use the bead box if you just like that container better.

teacher emergency kit baggies and tape

Materials

  • square potholders (The Tidy Mom post suggested potholders from Target. I had a hard time finding single square potholders. I ended up purchasing 2-piece oven mitt sets from Kmart. My square potholders are 7″ x 8″– not a perfect square– with a loop along one short side)

teacher emergency kit pot holders

  • Scotch tape
  • snack size Ziploc bags (6 1/2″ x 3 1/4″)
  • sewing machine
  • ~7/8″ button (coordinating color)
  • thread (coordinating color)

teacher emergency kit align baggies

Directions

  • Set your potholder on a flat surface with the loop on the right side. I have the potholder “hand pocket” facing inside, but I also made the bags with the pocket on the outside too. It is up to you how you want your potholder to face.
  • Place one snack bag on the right side with the baggie opening facing the right edge. Place a piece of tape on the top and bottom to keep the baggie from moving.
  • Place another snack bag on top with the baggie opening facing the left edge. The center should overlap with the first baggie. Place a piece of tape at the top and bottom.
  • Continue alternating baggies right and left. I liked 5 snack bags (=5 pockets). The Tidy Mom post used 10, but the bags fill up fast if you include bulky items and then the clutch won’t close.

coach survival kit zig zag stitch

  • Sew a zig zag stitch down the middle of the potholder, which should also be down the center of the Ziploc bags. Cut any loose threads. Carefully remove the tape from the edges without pulling or stretching the plastic bags.
  • Fold the clutch in half and pull the loop around to the front and eyeball where the button will need to be placed. If you do not have a loop on the potholder, follow the Tidy Mom site’s directions for adding a loop.
  • Attach the button with coordinating thread.

teacher emergency kit button

  • Gather the items you want in your emergency kit. I dug into my assortment of plastic bead bags and filled mini baggies with Advil, Tums, and mints. The clutches fill pretty quickly and flatter items work better. You won’t be able to fill the kit with as many things if you use travel sized aspirin tubes and whole rolls of Tums. I printed Avery labels and attached the Teacher Emergency Kit Baggie Labels to the little bags. The label size is 2/3″ x 1 3/4″ and is Avery #42895.

teacher emergency kit labels and tums

  • I created a Teacher Emergency Kit Gift Tag page and printed it on white cardstock, cut it into squares with my paper cutter, hole punched the corner, and tied with curly ribbon to the loop.

Content Suggestions

  • Aquaphor and/or chapstick
  • gum or mints
  • Bandaids
  • hair elastics
  • travel toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Tampax and pantyliner for female teachers (sorry, gentlemen)
  • Tylenol or Advil
  • Tums
  • change (for the soda machine)
  • nail file
  • safety pins and/or travel sewing kit
  • Sharpie pen
  • cough drops

teacher emergency kit contents

Notes

  • Don’t cheap out on the Ziploc bags. I bought CVS generic brand on sale, and they are a little flimsy. I wish I had used Ziploc or Glad snack bags.
  • Click the picture to see the directions for last year’s Teacher Emergency Kit in the bead box.

Back to School Teacher Emergency Kit

It is more confusing than I would like, but it is my first experience with a giveaway site.

American Girl Goes to School

Miss Priss is attending an American Girl camp this week, which got my creative juices flowing. Since the camp is being held at a school site, I thought we could make school supplies for the dolls. Like all good mother/daughter projects, Miss Priss got bored; TheRoomMom went overboard.

I will say that the 2-ring binder requires a steady hand and a glue gun, so some of the school supply construction was beyond Miss Priss’ capabilities. She made all of the pencils and did most of the work on the pocket folders. On the horizon are some sort of camping supplies for American Girl. Project brain is already engineering fake s’mores and lanterns.

American Girl Pencil Cup with Colored Pencils

Materials

  • round toothpicks
  • Sharpie markers, various colors
  • sharp cutting tool (like an X-acto knife)
  • sandpaper
  • plastic lid from a non-aerosol bug spray bottle (these are the same lids I used for the smoothie/milkshakes)

American Girl DIY colored pencils

Directions

  • Cut the toothpicks in half and sand the cut end until smooth.
  • With a Sharpie marker, color the very tip, leave some space, then color the base of the toothpick all the way around.
  • The proportions are a little small for American Girl, so you may want to cut the toothpick down about 2/3 to get a longer pencil than what we have.
  • Use the plastic lid as a pencil cup and place all finished pencils in the lid.

American Girl Pocket Folders

Materials

  • cardstock, variety of colors
  • paper cutter or scissors and ruler (highly recommend a paper cutter)
  • Elmer’s glue
  • little decorative stickers, scraps of paper
  • Avery labels (1/2″ x 3/4″), optional

AG pocket folder finished

Directions

  • Cut a piece of cardstock into a rectangle 5 1/2″ x 3 3/4″. Carefully fold in half and press the crease firmly.
  • Cut 2 pieces of cardstock into rectangles 1 1/4″ x 2 3/4″. These will be the pockets. If desired, cut a diagonal out of one side to make the inner pocket edge slope. We liked the pockets in contrasting colors, but you could make the pocket color and folder color match.

AG pocket folder interior

  • Put a thin line of glue around the bottom and outside edge of the pocket piece. Press each pocket piece onto the interior bottom of the left and right side of the folder. Let dry. Remember to leave the top and center sides unglued, so you can add papers to the pockets.
  • Cut scraps of paper into small pieces. I used some junk mail I had. Slide papers into the pockets.
  • On the exterior of the folder, decorate with mini stickers or the Avery label with a class subject written on the label.

AG pocket folder size

American Girl 2-Ring Binders

Materials

  • cardstock, variety of colors
  • paper cutter or scissors (recommend a paper cutter)
  • ruler (recommend metal)
  • printer or notebook paper
  • silver jump rings (7 mm)
  • silver paint pen
  • silver colored poster board
  • Elmer’s glue
  • X-acto knife
  • hot glue gun
  • needle nose pliers

American Girl binder

Directions

  • I originally saw the the binders in this Pin.  This woman makes items for dollhouses, so the proportions were too small, but her directions are very good.
  • Cut a piece of cardstock into a rectangle 6 1/2″ x 3 3/4″. Put the piece of cardstock landscape direction on a table. Draw a line 3″ in from the left edge and 3″ in from the right edge. Using a ruler (I recommend a metal ruler), wrap and crease along the lines.

AG binder folded with center

  • Cut a piece of silver posterboard 3 1/2″ by 3/8″. Round off the ends if desired. Glue the skinny piece of posterboard to the center of the cardstock between the 2 folds. Let dry.
  • Cut 3 pieces of printer or notebook paper 5 1/4″ x 3 1/4″. Stack the 3 sheets and fold in half.
  • With the pointy end of an X-acto knife, poke a hole through the folded sheets of paper near one end. Repeat at the other end. If you want a 3-ring binder, you could poke 3 holes, but this stuff is tiny, and I think 2 holes are sufficient.

AG binder add jump ring

  • With pliers, pull open 2 jump rings. Thread the jump ring through the paper. With the pliers, close the ring.

AG binder close jump ring

  • Hold the papers with the jump rings over the skinny silver posterboard piece and eyeball where the jump rings sit. Put 2 small blobs of hot glue on the silver posterboard piece and push the jump rings into the glue. You can use a toothpick to push things around if needed. Blow on the glue to cool.

AG binder hot glue

  • It is easy to get the folded side of the papers stuck in the hot glue. I was able to peel the paper away without separating the jump rings from the glue.
  • Finally, put 2 silver dots on the outside spine with the silver paint pen to look like the screws on the outside of a binder.

AG binder finished stack

  • You can add pockets to the binders following the directions for the pockets in the pocket folder above.

American Girl Clipboard

Materials

  • flat, wooden rectangle 3 5/8″ x 2 5/8″
  • mini binder clip (I think I found these in the fancy brad fastener area at Michael’s.)

American Girl DIY clipboard

Directions

  • Paint the wooden rectangle or decorate with stickers (or both). We left ours the natural wood color and added mini stickers from the American Girl Mini Scrap Books (see below).
  • Cut paper to fit the clipboard.
  • Clip paper to the clipboard with the mini binder clip.Metal “handles” can be up or down.

American Girl store bought items

Store Bought

  • In the American Girl craft aisle at Michael’s, we found a Mini Scrap and Stuff Books set. It came with the tiny spiral notebooks and the little stickers we used on the clipboard and outside of the pocket folders.
  • I located the mini manila file folders in the gift label section of Hobby Lobby. We wrote on the mini Avery labels and attached the white label to the tab.
  • The teeny tiny envelopes with enclosed notecards were in the baby shower/party aisle at Michael’s. The package had a variety of envelope and note sizes.
